DO NOT STAY AT HOSTEL OCTOGONGASTEHAUS

REVIEW OF HOSTEL OCTOGONGASTEHAUS IN BUDAPEST

Avoid This Hostel/Hotel -- It SUCKS!

I created this blog to let everyone know about my experience at this hostel, which culminated in me being assaulted by the hotel manager.

When I got to the hostel, I knew there would be problems from the start. First, they don't accept credit cards, which sucks but isn't a "big deal" -- except for the fact that, as the punk kid employee ("Pascal") at the front desk told me, they don't accept the local currency, either, without paying a "currency conversion" fee of about 10%. So, unless you have Euros with you (which you cannot get at an ATM in Hungary, where the currency is the Forint), you're paying more.

Then, I saw a sign that said the doors are locked at midnight. If you'd like to get in after 12:00 AM, there is a €4 charge to open the door. Seriously. Worse, at night, we found that we couldn't get out without waking up the hotel staff, as the door was BOLTED LOCKED with no way to open without the key. In the United States and most countries (possibly even Hungary if they were inspected), this is ILLEGAL as it is a FIRE HAZARD. Imagine trying to leave the hotel in the event of an emergency and find that the front door is locked.

The Internet was terrible. There was no bathroom (or shower) on the same floor. There was no shampoo anywhere that we saw. We didn't even have towels in our room.

All of the above makes for a shitty stay, but nothing compares to the fact that we were forced to leave early because I WAS ASSAULTED BY THE HOTEL MANAGER. On our second day of our stay they demanded to "inspect" our room to ensure that we did not damage anything. We are a quiet couple and did nothing in our room but sleep and work -- there was NO reason to suspect that anything was wrong, and indeed, nothing was wrong. I told them that was absurd and that they may not inspect -- we'd rather check out early if this is necessary. The hotel manager, who I assumed to be Pascal's father, pushed me into a wall and hit me in the face, and forced me to open the door for him. This is no joke, and I have filed a report with the Budapest police.

The above happened on 2011-07-16. We pre-paid for a third night (€23), which of course was lost due to this. So, I hope the staff of Hostel Octogongastehaus enjoys this "fuck you" as I'm sure that it will cost them much more than the €23 that they essentially robbed from me. Rightfully so, as I have never seen or heard of a hotel employee assaulting a customer.

If you have any questions about this review, feel free to post a comment.

Again, "FUCK YOU" Pascal and Daddy.
